Lubbers is a small
island between Marsh Harbour and Hope Town/Elbow Cay. Only recently
it has become the choice of many tourists looking for a quiet respite
away from the hustle and bustle of the busier out islands.
The only
commercial establishment on the island is Cracker
P’s, a restaurant
and bar which is a
short boat ride to their dock from the community boat dock, or a pleasant
golf cart ride away. This is a great place for lunch or dinner.
In
order to get to Lubbers it is necessary to rent
a boat as there is
no ferry service to the island. You will want a rental boat anyway
so that you can explore and snorkel the many islands in the Sea of
Abaco, shop at the different settlements and eat lunch or dinner at
their restaurants.
There are currently no stores on Lubbers Quarters so
it is best to purchase supplies while
you are in Marsh Harbour. But
on Lubber's, you can get fresh baked goods and homemade pizza
from Dee
at The Sunshine Shack. Just
hail her on VHF channel 16 (VHF radio provided). She has the best banana
bread, which you need to order a day ahead, and take-out pizza
that she prepares out of her home. (Dee and her husband are building
a grocery store on Lubbers, which should be open later this year.)
Hope
Town, pictured right, is only a 10 minute boat ride from Lubbers,
and it has both grocery & liquor
stores but the selection is limited. All stores are closed on Sunday.
Effective January
1st, 2006, a passport is required by the U.S. Government for travel
to the Bahamas. Allow a minimum of 6-8 weeks to receive passport or
expedite application accordingly - expediting of passports may require
up to 2 weeks. A passport is also required for children, regardless
of age.
